Heavy Duty Mechanic – Fleet Maintenance

Type: Full Time
Compensation: $25 - $31 / hour
Location: Romulus, Michigan, United States

Master Heavy Duty Mechanic – Fleet Maintenance

Romulus, MI | Union Position

If you’re a heavy-duty mechanic who likes variety, steady work, and getting paid for every hour you’re there, this is worth a look.

We’re looking for a Michigan Master Heavy Duty Mechanic to join a busy fleet shop working on a wide range of equipment. This is not the same truck every day — you’ll be working on diesel trucks, heavy equipment, emergency vehicles, snow

equipment, and more.

The right person will have strong diesel/heavy-duty experience, be comfortable diagnosing problems, and have the certifications to back up their skills.

What you’ll be working on:

  • Heavy-duty diesel trucks and equipment
  • Engines, transmissions, drivetrains, hydraulics, and electrical systems
  • Brakes, steering, suspension, fuel systems, and diagnostics
  • Salt trucks, sweepers, emergency vehicles, and other specialty equipment
  • Preventative maintenance and major repairs
  • Field service calls when equipment needs help outside the shop
  • Welding, fabrication, and equipment modifications when needed

This is a true all-around mechanic role — if it has an engine, wheels, hydraulics, or keeps a fleet moving, you’ll be working on it.

Schedule:

  • Monday – Friday | 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM
  • Overtime available whenever you want it
  • OT is not forced, but there is plenty available for mechanics who want to increase their earnings

Pay:

  • $25.05 – $31.32/hr to start (based on experience and union scale)
  • Built-in union raises over time

While the hourly rate is structured, the overall package is where this position stands out.

Benefits & Why Mechanics Stay:

This is a long-term union opportunity with a strong total compensation package:

  • Excellent union benefits package
  • $0 premium health care
  • 11.5% employer pension/retirement contribution
  • 10 vacation days + 9 personal days
  • Stable year-round work
  • Plenty of overtime available

No flat-rate pressure. No worrying about slow weeks. You’re paid for the time you put in.

What we’re looking for:

  • Michigan Master Heavy Duty Mechanic certification required
  • 5+ years of heavy-duty diesel/truck mechanic experience preferred
  • Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills
  • Experience with diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and fleet repair
  • CDL A preferred (or ability to obtain after hire)
  • Someone who takes pride in their work and can keep equipment moving

The bottom line:

If you’re tired of chasing hours, dealing with dealership politics, or working somewhere that doesn’t value experienced mechanics — this is a chance to join a stable shop with strong benefits, a pension, and as much overtime as you want to take.

If you’re a certified heavy-duty mechanic who knows how to diagnose and repair equipment, this could be a great long-term fit.
